This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday,September 20, 2002 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Migration continues in the northwestern part of the state. This week I have several reports of groups of Northern Flickers from throughout the region. One thing of note- Shelley Steva reported that she saw less than 10 American Crows on the entire trip from Thief River Falls to Fargo this week, and only five Red-tailed Hawks- 3 in Polk County and 2 in Red Lake County. This is a lot fewer than one would expect at this time of year. We wonder if the West Nile Virus is causing this.

Shelley Steva also reported seeing a COOPER'S HAWK in Norman County. 25 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen in Red Lake County.

>From Polk County, Lori Becker reports numbers of NORTHERN FLICKERS in the Wetlands, Pines, and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary yard this week. Also in northern Polk County, Gladwyn Lynne reported several GREAT EGRETS, 8 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 30 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, one AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, several RED-TAILED HAWKS, one BROAD-WINGED HAWK, several AMERICAN KESTRELS, lots of GREATER YELLOWLEGS and other assorted peeps, and one GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER at Angus Oslo Compound .

In Pennington County, the MERLIN was seen in Thief River Falls by Zeann Linder . The invasion of NORTHERN FLICKERS is also evident in the county.

Peder Svingen surveyed the shorebirds at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, September 15 along Marshall County Road 7 and Parker Pool. 292 shorebirds were found . They included 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 129 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 72 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 LEAST SANDPIPER, 22 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 7 STILT SANDPIPERS, 54 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, and 1 COMMON SNIPE.

Lake of the Woods County birds reported this week by Gretchen Mehmel included a Swan at Brown's Lake. She suspects that it is a non-breeding TRUMPETER SWAN. Other birds reported by Gretchen included BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE,and RUFFED GROUSE.

Thanks to Lori Becker, Gladwyn Lynne, Shelley Steva, Peder Svingen, and Gretchen Mehmel for their reports.
