This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, February 14th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Mike Hendrickson surveyed the Superior Landfill on the 13th, when a total of about 300 HERRING GULLS was present, in addition to 13 GLAUCOUS GULLS (12 adults and 1 2nd winter), 2 THAYER'S GULLS (1 adult and 1 1st winter), and 1 adult ICELAND GULL. Mike also reported an adult GLAUCOUS GULL from the Duluth Port Terminal on the 10th.
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL on Jean Duluth Road near the St. Louis Cty Highway Dept. was last seen on the 11th. Hawk Owls were also reported from the Gunflint Trail, with reports of owls near the Seagull Guard station, and a report of a singing pair on Cty Rd 50 near the Gunflint Pines Resort.
On the 10th, Audrey Evers reported two GREAT GRAY OWLS in central St. Louis Co., one on Hwy 11/110, 5.5 miles N. of the intersection with Hwy. 16. and another on Hwy 16, 1.5 miles west of the intersection with 11.
A MERLIN was in the Canal Park area on the 11th, and three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were still present on the 10th.
I would appreciate hearing about sightings of Evening Grosbeaks and Red Crossbills.
And finally, a male NORTHERN CARDINAL was singing his spring (or maybe St. Valentine's Day) song this week in the Hunter's Park neighborhood of Duluth.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, February 14th.
