This is the Duluth Birding Report for Wednesday, September 25th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The arrival of the first frost and the passage of the equinox this week brought a large movement of new migrants into Duluth. There are Yellow-rumped warblers, juncos, and other sparrows everywhere.
Sunday the 22nd was the big day at Hawk Ridge this year, with 21, 617 raptors, over 20,000 of them BROAD-WINGED HAWKS. On the 21st, two PARASITIC JAEGERS were seen at Wisconsin Point in Superior, along with a number of COMMON TERNS, CASPIAN TERNS, and BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
Jim Lind found six MARSH WRENS at Flood Bay in Lake County on the 24th.
Mike Hendrickson and others reported as many as ten species of sparrows at 40th Ave West, including both NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW and LE CONTE'S SPARROW.
Dudley Elmgren reported a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER from Brimson on the 23rd. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was at St. Scholastica on the 22nd. Carol Schumacher saw GRAY JAYS near the Carlton Exit and Hwy 210 and on St. Louis County Rd 187 south of 133 in the Sax-Zim area on the 19th. Alison Clarke had a NORTHERN GOSHAWK in her yard in eastern Duluth on the 24th.
