This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday February 3rd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The TUFTED DUCK is still being seen at the Blue Lake settling ponds just east of Shakopee. The ponds are located on the north side of Scott County Road 101 one mile west of U.S. highway 169.
On January 29th, Andrew Bicek reported a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Sherburne County: Directions are: Take County Road 5 north out of Big Lake to 253rd Ave. Go east for about one mile and take the first right following the signs for the Horse Camp. Take this road south for about one mile to the cul-de-sac and park here. The road continues on to the south as a snowmobile trail. Walk down this trail about 150 yards.
Betsy Beneke reported a male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the north end of Tamarac NWR, Becker County on January 26th. It was seen along Becker County Road 35 about two blocks south of the refuge boundary. George Skinner reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in Lake County on January 29th along Superior Forest Road 373, 1.6 miles north of the junction with the sign marked 'Isabella Lake 9 miles'. A THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was 1.3 miles north of this same junction.
SPRUCE GROUSE were seen January 29th along Lake County Road 2, one and a half miles north of Sand River.
Doug Johnson reported that a GREAT GRAY OWL was still present in Beltrami County on January 30th, about seven miles north of Kelliher along State Highway 72. On the 29th, a Great Gray was seen by Pauline Peeples along Pietz's Road, just west of Aitkin County Road 5 along County Road 18. A SNOWY OWL is being seen in Otter Tail County near the Skibvedt Cemetary about three miles north of Battle Lake on State Highway. 78, or about 1/2 mile south of Highway 72. Oscar Johnson found a Snowy Owl on the 30th along I-694 near the Hennepin - Ramsey County line. And the NORTHERN HAWK OWL reported previously from the town of Kimberly in Aitkin County was still there as of Saturday, January 29th. It was perching on various telephone poles along Aitkin County Road 56 near County Road 5.
A CAROLINA WREN is still visiting a feeder at the home of Eddie Edwards. It was seen as recently as the 31st of January in the town of Battle Lake in Otter Tail County.
Chris Benson reported a GOLDEN EAGLE near the Winona - Houston County line on January 29th. And as many as 45 WILD TURKEYS were seen by Dan Floren on January 31st just southeast of Lake Minnebelle in Meeker County. Other species reported in good numbers include TRUMPETER SWAN, NORTHERN HARRIER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, HORNED LARK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, SNOW BUNTING, and LAPLAND LONGSPUR.
