This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 23rd sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

An adult MEW GULL was reported on the Bloomington Christmas Bird Count at Black Dog Lake in Dakota County. The bird was seen in the mid-morning on the 18th near the observation deck, but despite extensive searches later that day and the following week there was only one possible second observation. If I hear of this potential fourth state record being seen again I will update this tape immedately.

John Hockema found two SHORT-EARED OWLS in Olmsted County on December 21st. Directions were to drive south from Rochester on County Road 1 to 80th St. SE, and turn left. Ken LaFond found a GREAT GRAY OWL in Beltrami County on the 17th. This was about seven miles north of Kelliher along highway 72 halfway between mile markers 26 and 27. There is a report of a possible SNOWY OWL in Roseville near the Roselawn Cemetery along Victoria Street from December 16th. And a NORTHERN HAWK OWL is being seen west of the town of Biwabik in St. Louis County, but I have no specific directions.

A TUFTED TITMOUSE has been coming to a feeder in the town of Woodbury in Washington County since December 19th.

A CAROLINA WREN is still being seen at the feeder of Eddie Edwards where it has been since November 21st. It was seen as recently as the 22nd of December in the town of Battle Lake in Otter Tail County.

And a HOARY REDPOLL was seen in with a group of COMMON REDPOLLS on the 18th at a feeder along NE Washington Ave. near Andover Dr. in Ham Lake, Anoka County.

Other birds being reported include a late GRAY CATBIRD still at a feeder in Shorewood, a few SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, plus NORTHERN SHRIKE and BOHEMIAN WAXWING.

In cooperation with the Minnesota Office of Tourism, highlights of this hotline can be now heard at a toll free number which is available to callers outside the Twin Cities area. The number is 1-800-657-3700.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday December 30th.
