This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday January 6th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The TUFTED DUCK found January 1st is still being seen at the Blue Lake settling ponds just east of Shakopee. The ponds are located on the north side of Scott County Road 101 exactly one mile west of U.S. highway 169.
That third state record CURVE-BILLED THRASHER is still visiting a feeder in western Minnesota as it has been since late November. Anyone interested in seeing this bird can call me directly.
On December 31st, a PRAIRIE FALCON was reported by Tom Smith from near his home in Otter Tail County. This was just off exit 55 of I-94 on the south side of the interstate. The Prairie Falcon seen recently at the grain elevators in south Minneapolis was still present as of January 4th. The elevators are just east of Hiawatha Ave. between 34th and 38th Street south.
June Foss reported a VARIED THRUSH at her backyard feeder and it has been seen there since late November. June's house is located about one and a half miles northeast of Skime in Roseau County. And the Varied Thrush in Shoreview near Turtle Lake in Ramsey County is still present. The bird is visiting a feeder at the home of Gordon Hinchcliffe.
On January 3, Scott Carpenter saw a GREAT GRAY OWL in the northeast corner of Aitkin County on County Road 200, about one mile west of U.S. Highway 2.
Two THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER were reported from along the Lima Mountain Road in central Cook County, but no specific location was given.
Steve Millard found a very late SORA on the Battle Lake Christmas Bird Count in Otter Tail County on January 2nd. And Ken Lafond had a late GREAT BLUE HERON fly past him in Blaine, Anoka County on December 30th. This is the latest date on record for Anoka County.
