This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday February 17th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The TUFTED DUCK is still being seen at the Blue Lake settling ponds just east of Shakopee. The ponds are located on the north side of Scott County Road 101 one mile west of U.S. highway 169.

The previously reported TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Sherburne County was still present on February 12th. Directions are: take County Road 5 north out of Big Lake to 253rd Ave. Go east for about one mile and take the first right, following the signs for the Horse Camp. Take this road south for about one mile to the cul-de-sac and park here. The road continues on to the south as a snowmobile trail. Walk down this trail about 150 yards.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL reported previously from the town of Kimberly in Aitkin County was still there as of Saturday, February 10th. It can be difficult to find, however, but has been seen perching on various telephone poles along Aitkin County Road 5.

Two PEREGRINE FALCONS were at the Black Dog power plant in Dakota County on the 13th. They were seen near the nesting platform situated on one of the towers.

In cooperation with the Minnesota Office of Tourism, highlights of this hotline can be heard at a toll free number which is available to callers outside the Twin Cities area. That number is 1-800-657-3700.
