On August 30th Steve Carlson found a LITTLE GULL on the east side of French Lake in northern Hennepin County. The gull was flying low over the surface most of the morning.

On August 26th there was a female WESTERN TANAGER at Lone Tree Lake near the town of Cottonwood in Lyon County. Apparently later attempts to relocate it were unsuccessful.

I have several reports of BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER from last weekend. Jerry Bonkoski checked the sod farm near Lydia in Scott County on August 25th and found four in the southwest corner. This farm is on the north side of Scott County road 10 and the best viewing is about a mile and a half west of state highway 13. Two Buff-breasted Sandpipers were at the Lewiston sewage ponds in Winona County of the 26th. Six were at the junction of Carver County roads 10 and 30 on the 27th. At the Empire sod farms in Dakota County was the unusual count of 60 Buff-breasted Sandpipers on August 26th. And nine were counted on the ball field at the end of Park Point in Duluth on August 25th.

Warren Nelson reports that a SHORT-EARED OWL was found over the weekend about four miles north of Aitkin on U.S. highway 169 in Aitkin County.

In cooperation with the Minnesota Office of Tourism, highlights of this hotline can be heard at a toll free number which is available to callers outside the Twin Cities area. That number is 1-800-657-3700.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday September 7th.
