This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 7th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A SNOWY OWL was seen on the 22nd along Marshall County road 54 north of Grygla.
Jim and Sharon Lind saw a GREAT GRAY OWL along the Stanley Road, three miles west of Highway 61 near Two Harbors in Lake County. On December 3rd a Great Gray Owl was seen in Lake County along the Echo Trail one mile north of highway 169. Cindy Butler reported three Great Gray Owls from Aitkin County over the past week. Two were seen along Aitkin County 64 north of Tamarack, and one was about seven miles south of McGregor along state highway 65. She also reported a Great Gray on the eastern end of the Hedboom Forest Road, southwest of Floodwood in St. Louis County.
On December 1st a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was on the west side of I-35 two miles north of the Barnum exit in Carlton County.
Two TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were found in the residential area of Knife River, Lake County on December 2nd. They were seen in several different spots but can often be found across the highway from Emily's General Store. Rick Pertilly reported another Townsend's Solitaire in Minneapolis near I-394 and Penn Avenue on December 7th. The bird was found in the Bryn Mar Meadows park.
Jerri Waddell reported a VARIED THRUSH on December 3rd at his home in Cass County. Jerri lives approximately 12 miles south of the town of Remer. On December 4th, Clare and Maurita Geerts reported that they have a male Varied Thrush coming to their feeding station on the north side of Mille Lacs Lake in Aitkin County. And a third Varied Thrush was observed by Gertie Carter at her home north of Skime in Roseau County on both the 25th and 26th. This is on the north side of Roseau County road 19, one mile east of county road 9.
On December 2nd, Rebecca Stouffer spotted an male EASTERN TOWHEE at the feeders of the Eagle Ridge Resort in Lutsen, Cook County. And Beth Konant found a SPOTTED TOWHEE in Minneapolis on November 26th and again on December 4th near 106th Street south and I-35W.
On December 1st a WINTER WREN was at the end of the first long boardwalk on the Bluff Trail running west from the parking lot at the Old Cedar Ave Bridge.
A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was seen November 26th by Chris and John Hockema in Fillmore County. On the first of December a second Yellow-rumped was reported from Lebanon Hills in Eagan.
A very late BALTIMORE ORIOLE was in Leenardia Simpson's backyard on November 27th in south Minneapolis, Hennepin County. Also late is the GREAT EGRET seen at Black Dog Lake in Burnsville on December 1st.
And finally, several WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are again over-wintering at the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis.
