This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 16th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

As is typical for this time of year, shorebirds dominate the birding news across the state.

On the 11th, there were 6 HUDSONIAN GODWITS at East Pool in the Big Stone NWR in both Lac Que Parle and Big Stone counties. Also present at this location on the 13th were both WILSON'S PHALAROPES and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. East Pool is formed by the dam on the east side of the Refuge.

The Clinton sewage ponds in Big Stone County had over 30 Wilson's Phalaropes and one Red-necked Phalarope on the 13th, and two Red-necked Phalaropes were at the Montrose sewage ponds in Wright County on August 11th.

And on the 12th a PIPING PLOVER was found in Big Stone County at the intersection of state highway 28 and county road 61. Four AMERICAN AVOCETS, 27 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, and two WILLETS have also been seen here. Apparently there were three Piping Plovers at this same site on July 28th.

A good variety of shorebirds has been reported from Lake County over the past week. At the Two Harbors golf course near the clubhouse have been SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Many of these same species have also been found at the Two Harbors airport and also at the 40th Ave West impoundment area in Duluth, St. Louis County.

A lone SANDERLING was at Lake Byllesby in the southern part of Dakota County on August 14th.

Five BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and 8 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen August 15th in a hayfield at the intersection of U.S. Highway 212 and Renville County Road 21.

On the 16th, a juvenile LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported from Carver Park in western Hennepin County. It was seen on shore of Crosby Lake just west of the Nature Center.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was found in Dakota County on August 14th. It was along 180th Street just west of Fischer Ave.

Several species of migrant warblers have been reported. These include CANADA WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, and NASHVILLE WARBLER, and also a few PHILADELPHIA VIREOS.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, August 23rd.
