This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday February 28th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Fifty GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen on the 23rd by Conny Brunell and Leslie Marcus in Olmsted County near Lake Shady off U.S. Highway 52. Doug Jenness found a single Greater White-fronted Goose on the 27th at the boat launch at Montissippi County Park in Wright County with a flock of about 40 CANADA GEESE.
Three NORTHERN HAWK OWLS can be found along the Gunflint Trail in Cook County. One is near mile post 45; one a quarter of a mile east of the trail on Cook County Road 46; and one was at the Gunflint Pines Resort.
On February 24th, Mariam Meyers discovered a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in her Minneapolis backyard. This is at the north end of Lake of the Isles. Please call the statewide birding report for the specific location. The bird can be seen from the driveway and was present as recently as the 28th.
A CAROLINA WREN was heard singing on the 23rd near the Hormel Nature Center in Austin, Mower County.
On the 23rd Sharon and Jim Lind found a HOARY REDPOLL among about 100 COMMON REDPOLLS at their feeders in Two Harbors, Lake County. Their address is 320 - 2nd Avenue. Since the 25th, there has been at least one and possibly two HOARY REDPOLLS at Don Kienholz's feeders in Duluth, St. Louis County. Birders are welcome to visit and watch from the driveway. Karen Sussman saw a SNOWY OWL just east of the Sax Zim bog in St. Louis County on February 23rd. The bird was along the east side of U.S. Highway 53 at mile marker 48 near the town of Central Lakes. Another Snowy Owl was seen on the same day just north of Albert Lea along Mower County Road 45 just past I-90. And on Lake County Road 9 a Snowy was found on the 23rd about a mile east of the St. Louis County line.
Jay Hamernick found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in the Sand Dunes State Forest of Sherburne County on the 23rd. Though the bird was not seen on the 24th, you can call Jay at 651-482-7984 for specific directions.
As many as twenty BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were near the town of Federal Dam, Cass County on the 23rd, and hundreds more were seen in the Grand Marais campground in Cook County on the 22nd. Other migrants reported to me over the past week include TRUMPETER SWAN, TUNDRA SWAN, RING-BILLED GULL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, SONG SPARROW, COMMON GRACKLE, and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD.
