This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday January 24th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL reported from Duluth on Jean Duluth Road, 3.6 miles north of Martin Road, near the St. Louis County Highway Department was still present all this week. Another Hawk Owl was seen on January 19th at the corner of Owl Avenue and St. Louis County road road 52 in the Sax-Zim bog area. Hawk Owls were also seen this week on Lake County Road 2, fourteen and a half miles south of county road 1, and on the Gunflint Trail in Cook County, 32 miles from Grand Marais at the junction with county road 50. Four Hawk Owls were seen in Roseau County on the 19th. All were found between mile posts 7 and 9 along state highway 310.
A GREAT GRAY OWL was reported from St. Louis County on the 21st. One was along county road 133, 1.7 miles west of the intersection of U.S. highway 53.
A SNOWY OWL was hunting along the Vermilion River just north of 180th Street between Goodwin and Hogan Avenues in Vermilion Township, Dakota County on January 20th. Just north of Duluth a Snowy Owl is being seen daily along U.S. highway 53 at mile marker 11.
On the 23rd, that 1st year GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen again at Black Dog Lake in Dakota County, east of the power plant. An adult GLAUCOUS GULL was also seen here.
A THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was found on the 21st along St. Louis County Road 16, two miles east of County Road 110. A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was also at this same location.
On January 22nd Oscar Johnson found a flock of 13 HORNED LARKS along 95th Avenue north near Noble Parkway in Brooklyn Park, Hennepin County.
Three callers reported seeing NORTHERN GOSHAWKS in the past week. They've been reported from both Richfield and Eden Prairie in Hennepin County, and from Duluth in St. Louis County.
