This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday December 27th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The male BRAMBLING that was discovered at a feeder in Otter Tail County on December 16th is still being seen daily. The most recent report I have is from December 27th. For privacy reasons, the home owners' name, address, and phone number will not be given out, and birders are asked to please not share this information should they somehow discover it. Everyone is welcome to visit under some specific guidelines, and these are as follows:
Visiting is restricted to daylight hours from Monday through Thursday. No one may visit on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday at any time.
All birders are asked to please not visit on Tuesday, News Year Day -- January 1st at any time.
Under no circumstances may the home owners' name, address, or phone number be posted anywhere on the internet.
With these guidelines in place and agreed upon, here are the directions: The bird is being seen near the town of Battle Lake. From town, drive west on Otter Tail County road 83 to county road 122. Turn west here and drive to Big Buck Road. Keeping to the right, follow this road 1.5 miles to the dead end and look for the cedar house. The feeder is behind this house on the back deck. Birders are free to observe from the upper deck but may not walk in or around the yard or investigate any other areas.
Finally, note that this is a shy, skittish bird, so please enjoy it quietly.
That potential third state record ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD in south Minneapolis was, amazingly, seen again on December 25th. Please call the Minnesota statewide Birding Report at 763-780-8890 for directions. Birders are welcome to visit, but are asked to quietly stand in the backyard well to the south of the feeder.
On the 21st, Tim Dawson reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Duluth on Jean Duluth Road at the entrance to the St. Louis County Highway Department This is two miles north of West Tischer Road.
I have two recent SNOWY OWL reports. One is from Meeker County. From the town of Litchfield, go south on state highway 22 for about five miles. Turn west on 190th and follow this road about one half mile to where it becomes a gravel road. The bird has been seen perched on power poles here. The other is in Kandiyohi County. From the town of Atwater, drive west on U.S. highway 12 for about one and a half miles to just past mile marker 86. On the north side of the highway there is a fence running north to south. The owl was sitting on this fence. The Snowy Owl reported earlier in southern Dakota County was found on the 22nd. It's being seen near the intersection of 200th and Fisher Road.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was reported from northern Anoka County on December 21st. It was was seen perched in a birch tree in Bethel Wildlife Management Area, which is located on Dogwood Street just north of the town of Bethel.
An adult GLAUCOUS GULL, and adult THAYER'S GULL, and an immature Thayer's Gull were all seen at Black Dog Lake in Dakota County on the 23rd.
On the 26th, Oscar Johnson reported a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flying over an agricultural field in Brooklyn Park, Hennepin County.
A MUTE SWAN was found in Wright County on the 21st. It was seen on the Mississippi River in Monticello in the company of hundreds of TRUMPETER SWANS.
Other reports this week include many feeder observations of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, plus a few NORTHERN SHRIKES and COMMON REDPOLLS.
