This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Monday June 10th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On June 9th, Terry Brashear observed an adult MISSISSIPPI KITE in Golden Valley, Hennepin County. The bird was seen briefly near the southwestern shore of Sweeny Lake which is just northeast of the junction of state highways 55 and 100.
This is the sixth report of Mississippi Kite in this same general region in the past 45 days.
The first sighting was on April 26th when Anthony Hertzel spotted an adult Mississippi Kite just north of the Seven Hi shopping mall at state highways 7 and 101. About an hour later Sharon Koval Stiteler relocated this bird in the same general area.
Then on May 9th, Mark Alt observed an adult Mississippi Kite at the junction of U.S. Highway 169 and Anderson Lakes Road.
Two weeks later, on May 25th a Mississippi Kite was reported from Murphy-Hanrehan Park in Scott County but no specific location was given and the age of the bird was not reported.
And on June 1st Steve Roman identified a Mississippi Kite at the junction of U.S. highway 169 and state highway 55. This bird was too far away to be aged.
All these sightings are within just a few miles of each other and it seems plausible that a single individual may be over-summering in the southwestern suburbs of Minneapolis.
A PAINTED BUNTING has been coming to a feeder in northern St. Louis County. The bird was last seen on Wednesday June 8th. I have very little information on this observation, and for additional details call the Duluth hotline at 218-728-5030.
