This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 2nd.
On December 28th, the following species were seen in Lake County along the Spruce Road, a quarter of a mile east of the Endless Waters Road: THREE-TOED WOODPECKER, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, BOREAL CHICKADEE, PINE GROSBEAK, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL. Another Black-backed Woodpecker was about four miles down the Spruce Road at the snowmobile trail crossing. The Spruce Road runs east off state highway 1 about 14 miles northwest of Lake County Road 2. On January 1st, a Black-backed Woodpecker was found in the Sax/Zim Bog area of St. Louis County along McDavitt Road, 2.6 miles north of Sax's Road. And Frank Nicoletti reported a Black-backed Woodpecker on the state trail off Jean Duluth Road in Duluth on the 28th.
On December 28th, Colin Gjervold reported a GREAT GRAY OWL in the Sax-Zim area on St. Louis County Road 7 south of the sod farm.
Gary Nelson found a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on Lake Superior off 21st Avenue east in Duluth on the 1st. Two adult GLAUCOUS GULLS were at Knife River, Lake County on the 28th.
On December 16th. Forest Strnad had a CAROLINA WREN visit his balcony in Faribault, Rice County, and the bird appeared again on the 26th. Dave Bartkey found a Carolina Wren on January 1st along the Straight River Trail, also in Faribault, Rice County. This bird was seen along the riverbank behind the Trail's Edge apartment complex.
The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen again in Rice County on December 27th. It was found along Aberdeen Road 0.6 mi south of 90th St. On January 1st and again on the 2nd a Townsend's Solitaire was seen at Sibley St. Park in Kandiyohi County. It was found in a group of red cedars about 2/10 of a mile east of the horse camp in the western part of the park.
A flock of more than 200 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was reported January 2nd along state highway 61 north of the town of Tofte in Cook County.
A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was found by Julian Sellers along Minnehaha Creek in Minnehaha Park, Minneapolis on December 26th.
