This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday November 30th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On the Mississippi River between the towns of Red Wing and Reads Landing, 327 BALD EAGLES were counted on November 12th by Mike Middleton. Large concentrations such as this are not that uncommon through December, and the bird should begin to disperse by early January.

Four SPRUCE GROUSE were seen near the town of Isabella in Lake County on the 24th. For further information on these and other birds in northeastern Minnesota, you can call the Duluth Birding report at 218-525-5952.

On November 25th, Dave Thurston found six WILD TURKEYS along U.S. Highway 61, one half mile from the bridge just north of the town of Hastings. WILD TURKEYS have also been seen in Bloomington.

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found along U.S. Highway 61 in Lake County, just south of the entrance to Gooseberry Falls State Park. The bird was seen be several people from the 23rd through at least the 25th.

Two NORTHERN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS were discovered on the Spruce Road in Lake County. Spruce Road is about 14 miles east on Highway 1 from the junction of County Road 2. A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was reported by John Gislason on the 24th in Pine County. The bird was seen about one mile north and 1/4 mile west of the town of Cloverton. A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was also reported from Itasca County, this on November 18th. The location was about ten miles NE of the town of Squaw Lake, though no further details were given.

A HERMIT THRUSH was seen feeding on buckthorn at the Minnesota Valley Wildlife refuge in Bloomington. The bird was near the headquarters building on the 28th.

Andy Buggs reports that the SUMMER TANAGER, which had been coming to various feeders in the town of Minnesota City in Winona County, was seen as recently as the 25th at his feeder.

A subadult male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, first noticed in October, was seen as recently as November 27th, at a feeder west of Montecello. Though it is getting late for this species, records into December and even January are not without precedence, and there are even a few February records.

Mixed flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS, HORNED LARKS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported on the 28th by Ray Glassel and Bob Janssen. The birds were along state highway 19 between the towns of Gaylord and Winthrop in Cottonwood County. Another report of a similar mixed flock was reported from Thomas Lake Wildlife Management Area in Le Sueur County, also on the 28th.

COMMON REDPOLLS, PINE SISKINS and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES are being reported by numerous people from all across the southern half of the state. One feeder in Ramsey County had approximately 50 siskins the morning of November 30th. WHITE-WINGED AND RED CROSSBILLS were reported from Anoka County near 197th and Lexington Avenue by Terry Brashear and Joe Beck on the 26th.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, December 7. If you have birds to report, please leave your name, phone number and a brief but specific message.
