This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday August 1st sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Forest Strnad called to report two TRUMPETER SWANS in Rice County. Apparently the birds have been present on Kelly Lake since the 15th of June. Occasionally they can be found on the channel between Kelly and Dudley lakes.
The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE is still being seen on Brown Lake at the Minnesota River Valley State Park. This is near the town of Jordan in Scott County. The goose is in with 20 Canada Geese. John Linen reports that YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS are also in the area.
Darryl Moen found six PIPING PLOVERS on July 26th on the north side of Meeker County Road 21, 1/2 mile east of the public access to Big Swan Lake, which is near the Meeker/Wright County line. Other shorebirds seen here include LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST, BAIRD'S and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
WILLOW FLYCATCHERS were at Long Lake Regional Park on August 1st near the first parking lot on the right, and an early TENNESSEE WARBLER was in Brown County, three miles south of the the town of Sleepy Eye on MN highway 4.
Also in Brown County, a singing male BLUE GROSBEAK was seen by Craig Mandel on July 26th at a gravel pit two miles east of the town of Sandborn. Near this location on July 31st, Bob Janssen found additional BLUE GROSBEAKS along county road 23, one mile east of Brown County Road 2.
Finally, while canoeing the Rum River on July 31st, Barb Kull reported the following species between the towns of Isanti and St. Francis: GREEN HERON, BALD EAGLE, OSPREY, and SPOTTED SANDPIPER.
