This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday September 5th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

RED-NECKED PHALAROPES continue to be reported in above average numbers. On August 31st, Doug Johnson found nineteen at the Blackduck sewage ponds in Beltrami County, and a single RED- NECKED PHALAROPE at the Bagley sewage ponds in Clearwater County on September 2nd. And Peder Svingen found ten RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Greenbush sewage ponds in Roseau County on the 1st. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was also seen here. Carol Schumacher reports four BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at the Lewiston sewage ponds in Winona County on August 31st. Also on the 31st, Paul Budde and Mark Ochs found a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at the mudflats along Carver County road 30 near New Germany. And seven BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were in Duluth on September 1st.

13 species of shorebirds were at the Barnsville sewage ponds on the 4th. Species noted there by Cole Foster include BLACK- BELLIED and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and a single HUDSONIAN GODWIT. A second HUDSONIAN GODWIT, several RED KNOTS plus 12 other species of shorebirds were at the 40th Ave west mudflats in Duluth on the 1st. Terry Brashear reports 1500 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS migrating through Minneapolis on the evening of September 2nd. A migration of nighthawks was also noted by Mary McGrath in Burnsville on the 4th.

I have a belated report of three BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS seen July 28th at the southeast end of Lake Three near the town of Ely in St. Louis County. Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were also seen here on the 29th. Two RED CROSSBILLS were reported by Doug Johnson near the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca on the 2nd.

Elsewhere, the following migrants were reported: Two EARED GREBES seen by Chuck Mayer at Lake Harriet on the 31st of August. Ellen Lowery of Ramsey County saw a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER on August 23rd. And Julie Brophy had a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at her feeder in south Minneapolis on August 31st.
