This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 4th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Three BLACK SCOTERS were seen on Lake Harriet on December 1st. An OLDSQUAW was at the far eastern end of Black Dog Lake in Dakota County also on December 1st. That BARROW'S GOLDENEYE is still at the Blue Lake treatment plant in Scott County. And 32,000 COMMON MERGANSERS were counted on Lake Pepin in Wabasha County also on December 1st.
No one has recently reported the Gyrfalcon near the railroad tracks and grain elevators which are between Hiawatha and Dight Avenues, from 36th to 42nd streets south in Minneapolis. At least one PRAIRIE FALCON has been seen here since November 26th, and a pair of PRAIRIE FALCONS was reported here on the 28th. A possible white phase GYRFALCON was reported from the town of from Sabin in Clay County. This was on December 10th along County Road 52 just north of town near Township Road 69.
A possible 1st winter GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL was seen by Peder Svingen on the main breakwater in Grand Marais in Cook County on December 2nd. Neither the GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL nor the recently reported BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE have been seen since. However, several THAYER'S GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS and two ICELAND GULLS have been seen. Two adult THAYER'S GULLS and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were near the DNR building at Lake City on Lake Pepin on the 1st. A GLAUCOUS GULL was on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis on the 1st, and Lane Elwanger reported a 1st winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL on the east side of Black Dog Lake on November 28th.
Several SPRUCE GROUSE were seen along Lake County Road 2 just north of the Sand River on November 28th.
Warren Nelson found a SNOWY OWL along Aitkin country road 1, seven and a half miles north of the town of Aitkin. He also reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER from Aitkin County, along state highway 200 just east of mile marker 183, between the towns of Hill City and Jacobson. At the Rabey tree farm near mile marker 186 upwards of two dozen BOREAL CHICKADEES and several GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS are present.
Most interesting is the TUFTED TITMOUSE coming to Dan Johnson's bird feeder in Washington County.
A VARIED THRUSH was seen in the town of Windom in Cottonwood County at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 17th Street but it has not been reported since November 27th. And Betsy Beneke reports that the NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD first found on November 24th in Detroit Lakes, Becker County on the 1000 block of West Lake Drive is still present, though reports now put it about one half mile west of here.
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were in Lake City in Wabasha County on the 1st, at the Landscape Arboretum in Carver County on the 28th along with several PURPLE FINCH, and in Stearns County near the town of St. Joseph on the 2nd.
