This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday January 8th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
That male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE is still at the Blue Lake treatment plant in Scott County, and it was reported as recently as January 4th. Among the many other ducks seen there were CANVASBACK, HOODED MERGANSER, BUFFLEHEAD, NORTHERN PINTAIL, AMERICAN WIGEON and LESSER SCAUP.
Steve Duane watched a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK for a few minutes in his yard in south Minneapolis on January 3rd and another was in Lou Dinzl's yard in Brooklyn Park on the 8th.
At least one PRAIRIE FALCON is still being reported near the railroad tracks and grain elevators which are between Hiawatha and Dight Avenues, from 36th to 42nd streets south in Minneapolis.
Two SNOWY OWLS have been reported from Kandiyohi County by Randy Frederickson. One bird was seen near the town of Willmar along Willmar Ave. about 3.75 miles east of Hwy 71. The 2nd bird is in the SE corner of the county along county road 2, just south of county road 18. A SNOWY OWL was seen in downtown Minneapolis on the 6th, and Manley Olson reports of another snowy along interstate 94 in Afton, Washington County.
A LONG-EARED OWL was reported on January 1st from Washington County at a state wildlife management area near the town of Bayport.
The second GREAT GRAY OWL of the season was seen in Kanabec County by Douglas Lake on January 4th. This was in the wildlife management area that is within the Snake River State Forest, about two miles southwest of McMullen Lake.
Chet Meyers has an apparently overwintering YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in his Minneapolis yard, and it was last seen January 8th. Most unusual was the reported flock of 20 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS passing through Ken Sporre's yard in Fridley, Anoka County on January 4th.
Two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS were seen by Bob Shultz at the south end of the Bloomington Ferry Bridge in Scott County on Jan 2nd. Bob also reported five EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were in the Louisville Swamp area of northern Scott County on December 31st. Interesting was the flock of 12 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS reported by Kathy Fuller in Washington County on January 1st, though no specific location was given.
Leslie Kottke still has that CAROLINA WREN at her feeding station in the town of Rochester in Olmsted County. Please call before visiting at 507-280-9444. A TUFTED TITMOUSE is also putting in an occasional appearance at Leslie's feeders.
A VARIED THRUSH is visiting the feeders of Phyllis & Bob Fick. This is along the southeast shore of Lake Melissa near Detroit Lakes in Becker County and the bird has been seen as recently as January 4th. And a HERMIT THRUSH was seen January 3rd at Lake Minnewaska in Carver County by Reggie Carlson.
RED CROSSBILLS were reported by Jeanie Joppru from Beltrami Island State Forest, Beltrami County. And numerous COMMON REDPOLLS can be seen near the home of Paul Schwartz on the north side of Otter Lake in Anoka County. Several redpolls are also being found at John Walner's Anoka County home. Terry Brashear found two EVENING GROSBEAKS on Jan 8th near Sucker Lake in Vadnais Heights in Ramsey County.
Other winter species from around Minnesota include a NORTHERN FLICKER at the suet feeder of Stewart Jump in Eden Prairie on the 2nd, an EASTERN TOWHEE made a brief visit to Bill Stjern's Woodbury yard on December 30th joining a flock of WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS already there, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS can also be seen on the government center grounds in downtown Minneapolis and up to five were in Lou Dinzl's Brooklyn Park yard on the 8th, a FOX SPARROW visited Bob Williams feeder in Bloomington on the 1st, and finally, NORTHERN CARDINALS have been reported singing their Spring territory songs in Minneapolis.
