This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 18th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

I have no additional information on the probable GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL seen Sunday the 14th in Duluth by Karl Bardon and Peder Svingen. This second winter juvenile bird was observed at the Superior port entry of Lake Superior at the far end of Minnesota Point. Observations may be easier from the WI side. For additional information and updates of this, only the second state record Glaucous-winged Gull, call the Duluth birding report at 218-525-5952.

That BARROW'S GOLDENEYE is still at the Blue Lake treatment plant in Scott County, and it was reported as recently as the 13th.

At least one PRAIRIE FALCON is still being reported near the railroad tracks and grain elevators that are between Hiawatha and Dight Avenues, from 36th to 42nd streets south in Minneapolis, and I have a report that a GYRFALCON may have made a brief appearance there on the 14th. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen and reported by Julian Sellers on December 14th at the Ford Dam in St. Paul. And a MERLIN was seen by Reggie Carlson in Minnetonka on the 13th.

On December 13th, Forest Strnad reported what he considered to be a first winter ICELAND GULL from Black Dog Lake in Dakota County just west of the observation deck. Since then several other callers have reported an Iceland Gull from this same general area. The recently reported first winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL is also still present.

An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL can still be found in Ruth Andberg's yard in the town of Anoka, Ramsey County. Ruth invites anyone interested in seeing or photographing the bird to stop by for a visit, but please call first. The bird is roosting in a Wood Duck house to the right of the garage.

A SNOWY OWL was seen by Betsy Beneke just north of the town of Audubon along Becker County Rd. 13 on December 11th. A second SNOWY OWL was found in Red Lake County by Ken LaFond on the 13th. This was about one half mile south of the town of Oakley.

Dorothy Bartels has a CAROLINA WREN in her Bloomington yard. The bird was first noticed several weeks ago, but was seen as late as the 18th.

A BROWN THRASHER is lingering late at Ken Norkee's Minneapolis feeder, where it was seen as recently as the 12th.

Interesting is the COMMON YELLOWTHROAT discovered by Jim Pomplin on December 15th at the Old Cedar Ave. Bridge in Bloomington. This bird has apparently been there for several weeks.

On Sunday the 14th, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported in south Minneapolis, and they are being reported regularly in St. Paul from just north of the Como Golf Course and from near the junction of St. Clair and Snelling Avenues. A flock of White-winged Crossbills was seen in Cottage Grove, Washington Co. on the 15th, and at Lake Vadnais, Ramsey Co., also on the 15th. EVENING GROSBEAKS and PINE GROSBEAKS have been reported at Big Willow Park in Minnetonka, Hennepin County, from Tamarak NWR in Becker County, and eleven COMMON REDPOLLS, which have been scarce as of late, were reported at John Walner's feeder in Anoka County on the 12th.

Thanks to Ned Winters, Val Cunningham and Jessie Ellis.
