This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday January 15th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Several SNOW GEESE were reported by Mike Butterfield on Jan 10th near the town of Plato in McLeod County. Four Snow Geese have also been reported from Silver Lake in Rochester, Olmsted County on Jan 14th.
Two SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS were seen in Wright County along the Crow River near the town of Dayton. This report was from Jan 14th. Julie Brophie found a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK on Jan 12th in her yard in the town of Victoria in Carver County.
Several SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were reported by Craig Menze near the town of Kroschel along county road 84 in northeastern Kanabec County. The grouse were about 3 1/2 miles west of county road 20.
Jay Walter found a SNOWY OWL at the Minneapolis St. Paul airport on Jan 15th. Check at the end of 66th Street in Richfield.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER is hanging out in the Minneapolis yard of Walter Pratt. This is the second report of an overwintering sapsucker this January.
Only the third VARIED THRUSH of the season was reported on the 13th. The bird is at the home of Lou Graham who lives in Wright County south of the town of Buffalo along highway 25.
The CAROLINA WREN first reported on December 18th from Bloomington between Russell and Sheridan Avenues was seen again on Jan 14th. The bird is visiting several backyard feeders along 110th Street South.
Bill Stjern has an EASTERN TOWHEE frequenting his feeder in St. Paul. It was most recently seen Jan 11. A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW is also being seen. And WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are also being reported from near the government center grounds in downtown Minneapolis, where as many as five have been seen recently.
Upwards of 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were found by Ron Selbitschka on Jan 9 near the nursing home in the town of Crosby, in Crow Wing County. Several COMMON REDPOLLS and a single HOARY REDPOLL were also seen in the area. Another HOARY REDPOLL was identified from a group of up to 60 Commons near the town of Dayton in Wright County by Holly Martini on Jan 15th. Redpolls have also been reported from Carlos Avery refuge in Anoka County. And WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS have been reported recently from Minneapolis, Bloomington, St. Paul, and Duluth.
