This is the Minnesota statewide birding report for Thursday June 4th
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A WORM-EATING WARBLER was found on June 2nd by Tony Hertzel and Parker
Backstrom at Seven Mile Creek County Park in Nicolett County. The bird was
found singing about a quarter of a mile down trail number 2 where it
crosses the creek.
That BEWICK'S WREN found in Sherburne County last May 20th is still at the
Camp in the Woods campground. From U.S. highway 169 go west on Sherburne
County Road 9 for about 2 1/4 miles. Go south on 144th Street for 1/2 mile
to 289th Ave. Take this road west to the Camp in the Woods sign on the
left. Check the pines in the campground and along the road.
On May 29th and 30th a PARASITIC JAEGER was on Lake Superior in Duluth.
The bird was seen from the beach near the recreation area of Park Point.
Also seen in Duluth was a PACIFIC LOON found by Craig Menze on May 30th on
the bay side of Lake Superior off Park Point; two RED-THROATED LOONS seen
on May 31st by Mike Henderickson, again off Park Point; and an immature
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL seen by several birders on Park Point also on the
30th.
As well, several species of shorebirds were seen in Duluth on the
30th. Most of these were seen at the 40th Ave. west area and
include both MARBLED GODWIT and HUDSONIAN GODWITS, a RED KNOT,
numerous WHIMBRELS, SANDERLING, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, DUNLIN,
WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and RUDDY TURNSTONES. RUDDY TURNSTONES have
also turned up in Morrison County at the western edge of Rice Lake
southeast of Little Falls, in Aitkin County at the Garrison Marina
on the western edge of Mille Lacs Lake on May 31st, and 18 were
seen by Drew Smith on June 3rd at Lake Byllesby Park in Dakota
County.
GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen at two locations over the weekend. Two birds
were seen along Pietz's Road, which runs north from Aitkin County Road
18 about four miles east of U.S. 169. And a GREAT GRAY was seen in the
Sax-Zim bog area along St. Louis County Road 213 one and a half miles
south of state highway 27.
From Aitkin County, Warren Nelson reports that a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD is
visiting the feeder of Don Lind, who is seeing the bird only occasionally.
The Linds live on the west side of Gun Lake along county road 78, about
three and a half miles north of state highway 210. Warren also reports
that a ROSS'S GOOSE is being seen about four miles north of the town of
Aitkin along county road 1.
