This is the Minnesota statewide birding report for Thursday September 17th
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Two LEAST TERNS were discovered at Lone Tree Lake on Saturday, September
12th. From the town of Cottonwood in extreme northeastern Lyon County
drive 1.5 miles west on Lyon County Road 10, then north one mile to Lone
Tree Marsh. Both terns were seen to fly off later that evening and have
not been reported since.
On September 14 a LITTLE GULL of undescribed age was reported at the
Wealthwood access along the north shore of Lake Mille Lacs in Aitkin
County. I have no further reports but the bird may still be in the area.
On Wednesday September 17 Peder Svingen and Karen Sussman observed a
PARASITIC JAEGER just south of Canal Park in Duluth, St. Louis County.
A variety of shorebirds was reported from Stearns County on September
16 by Craig Mandel. The following species were all seen on mud
flats out in the Pomme de Terre River, which runs through the city
park of the same name in the town of Morris: AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER,
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, COMMON SNIPE,
plus SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER,
and STILT SANDPIPER. The park is located on Stearns County Road
10, 1/2 mile east of U. S. Highway 59. Ken Lafond reported over a
thousand shorebirds in Stearns County on a small pond along state
highway 55 about one mile west of the town of Belgrade. Included
in this group of about 14 species were RED KNOT and RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE.
Chris Benson reported NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW on the 17th in
Olmsted County at the east reservoir. Take 19th street west to 70th Ave.
Go right and drive to the reservoir then park and walk along the north
shore.
In Rochester, Olmsted County, a CAROLINA WREN was seen again at Leslie
Kotkke's feeder on September 17th. Please call Leslie before visiting.
Mark Citsay reported a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE on the 12th, approximately a
quarter mile north of Bald Eagle Park in White Bear Township in Washington
County.
On September 10 Lane Elwinger found a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER at
Wood Lake Nature Center in Minneapolis. The bird was seen near the second
culvert that crosses the trail as you head south from the Nature Center.
This bird was still present at least through the 13th.
