This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 24th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On the 24th, Peder Svingen reported a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL at Canal Park in Duluth, St. Louis County, and GLAUCOUS GULLS have been reported by several people at Pine Bend landfill in Inver Grove Heights, Dakota County.
A SNOWY OWL was seen in Pine County on December 19th but the directions were somewhat confusing, given as south of Lake Eleven and east of Military Road. Another SNOWY OWL was reported from near Lakeville in Dakota County, but no specific directions or date was given by the caller.
On December 22, two SHORT-EARED OWLS were near the town of Plainview, one mile north and one mile west of the junction of Wabasha County Roads 25 and 4.
A CAROLINA WREN at the feeder of Betty Turnham in Medina, Hennepin County on December 24. Apparently, the bird has been seen on a regular basis for the past two months.
Several VARIED THRUSH have been reported in the past week. On the 21st, Oscar Johnson reported one from a feeder in Maple Grove. Another was seen by Marilyn Cornman on December 19th in Lakeville, Dakota County, and it was still present on the 21st. On the 20th, Jo Blanich reported a VARIED THRUSH from the town of Crosby in Crow Wing County. On the December 22nd Two Harbors CBC in Lake County one was seen at the junction of 3rd Ave. and 2nd St., and a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was along 1st Ave. east and 5th St.
A GRAY CATBIRD was seen at the Bass Ponds area in south Minneapolis by Bob Williams on the morning of December 25th.
Bruce Fall counted up to 3500 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on December 14th at Croftville in Cook County.
Ron Dexter has a late YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER coming to his St. Paul suet feeder. A second late sapsucker was reported by Walter Pratt from near Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis on the 21st; up to a 23 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were counted by Ken LaFond at Carlos Avery Refuge in Anoka County on the 20th; and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are being seen at the downtown Minneapolis government center.
