This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 31st sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On 26 December, Kark Bardon reported two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at the Burnsville Landfill in Dakota County. At least one of these birds has also been reported at Black Dog Lake in Dakota County.

A VARIED THRUSH was reported by Steve Shadd at his home east of Pine City in Pine County. The bird first appeared on Christmas day. Another VARIED THRUSH has been seen since December 16th by Evyonne Shenard at her feeder in of the town of St. Francis in Anoka County. And Mark Alt refound that VARIED THRUSH reported last week from a feeder in Maple Grove, Hennepin County, at 15967 105th Ave. North.

A pair of GREAT GRAY OWLS was seen in Beltrami Island Forest, Lake of the Woods County. From the town of Williams go south on county road 2 for nine miles. Ben Thiem reported the owls on December 26th.

John Kroll reported a towhee from his feeder in Long Prairie, Todd County on the 30th, but it wasn't clear if this was a Spotted or an Eastern Towhee.

Other species reported recently include several GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS -- some as far north as Becker County, two COOPER'S HAWK -- one in St. Paul on the 27th and another in Redwood County on the 30th County, and many people reported an influx of AMERICAN ROBINS. One caller reported as many as 60 in a yard near Grey Cloud Island, Washington County. And Allen Kuntz has a very late YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in his yard in Golden Valley, Hennepin County. It was seen as recently as December 28th.
