This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday December 2nd sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The KING EIDER reported earlier from Grand Marais, Cook County, was rediscovered north of town at mile post 116 of the Old North Shore Road. This female eider was seen on the 28th and again on the 29th feeding about 100 yards off shore on Lake Superior.
In Lyon County Paul Egeland reported a BLACK SCOTER on Ladyslipper Lake southeast of the town of Cottonwood on the 24th. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was near the boat landing on the eastern shore of Lake Ripley, Meeker County on the 30th. And on the 29th Dan Floren found a female LONG-TAILED DUCK (Oldsquaw) on the southeast side of Lake Lillian in Kandiyohi County, and the bird was seen again on the 30th. Check the outlet that has a short access road.
Randy Frederickson found a late SORA on Sunday November 28th near Willmar.
The PRAIRIE FALCON, found previously by Bruce and Susan Fall, was seen feeding atop a grain elevator along Dight St. between 36th and 37th in south Minneapolis on November 30th. Dight is one block east of Hiawatha Ave.
Chet Meyers reported a NORTHERN GOSHAWK from Loring Park in Minneapolis on the 29th. This is the first report of Goshawk in the southern part of the state this fall.
A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen by Craig Mandel in the Sax-Zim bog area of St. Louis County. The owl was along county road 133 about 1.8 miles west of county road 7. And a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found in the bog on December 2nd by Anthony Hertzel. This was .4 miles south of St. Louis County Road 52 along County Road 7.
Leslie Kottke still has a TUFTED TITMOUSE coming to her feeder in Rochester, Olmsted County, and it was seen as recently as November 30th.
On Sunday November 28th Tom Tustison found a female YELLOW WARBLER at the St. Catherine College campus in St. Paul, Ramsey County. This is a record late date for Minnesota and the only November record.
In Cloverton, Pine County, PINE GROSBEAKS and EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in good numbers on the 25th. Evening Grosbeaks were also reported as far south as Roseville in Ramsey County on the 29th.
Other reports include many TUNDRA SWANS, plus SNOW GOOSE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, COMMON REDPOLL, and PINE SISKIN.
