This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 27, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

As reported on last Sunday's update and those previously, there were lots of interesting birds seen last week and during the last 2 weekends. However, since last weekend the birding has quieted down, with GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, RUDDY DUCK, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, PARASITIC JAEGER, still one SABINE'S GULL and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS being the most significant birds reported the past few days.

The Gr White-fronted Goose was seen Sept 23-24 along the Zimmerman Rd just W of N Tischer Rd. A male Ruddy Duck was apparently seen both Sept 23 and 24 at Park Point on the lake side of the Recreation Area. The Hudsonian Godwit found on the 22nd at the 40th Ave West Erie Pier area was still present there today. At least 1 Parasitic Jaeger was seen again at Wisconsin and Park Points Sept 24. One juv Sabine's Gull was seen again on the Wisconsin side of the Superior Entry today; there had been several sightings of this gull here between Sept 14 and 23. And as recently as today Black-backed Woodpeckers are still present in the pine plantation at Hawk Ridge, with no fewer than 4 seen on some days this week. The Pinewoods Trail through these pines begins off Skyline Pkwy, 3/4 mi beyond the Main Overlook.

Since last weekend, however, there have been no additional reports of RED-THROATED LOON (last seen at Park Pt Sept 23), PACIFIC LOON (which was briefly at Park Pt Sept 22), WHIMBREL (also briefly, at Wisconsin Pt only on the 21st), WILLET (seen Sept 22 at 40th Ave West), POMARINE JAEGER (the adult was at Park Pt only on the 19th), and ARCTIC TERN (not seen at the Superior Entry since Sept 21).

Meanwhile, the raptor flight at Hawk Ridge has been very disappointing this month, due to only a few days with favorable W or NW winds. And unfortunately the weather through Sunday does not look conducive to much hawk migration, with mild mid to upper 60s and E or S winds in the forecast.

A total of only about 25,000 hawks has been counted this month, including just over 14,000 Broad-wingeds and only about 7,000 Sharp-shinneds. The highest one-day totals so far were a modest 5,528 on the 12th (4,587 of these Broad-wingeds) and 3,995 on Sept 13 (3,356 of these Broad-wingeds). There have only been 6 other days with counts over 1,000.

On a positive note, however, single ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS appeared earlier than normal on the 25th and 26th, and the banders have started catching a few NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, with 12 banded last night. As always, see the Hawk Ridge website, , for the daily counts of each species this fall.

Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on October 4. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
