This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday September 25th sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The best birds of the week were the two WHITE-FACED IBIS reported to my by John Schladweiler on September 25th. The birds, which were originally discovered by Jack Heather, are being seen at the Haberman Wildlife Management Area in Murray County. Go 1.5 miles east of the town of Fulda on state highway 62. Then north on county road 40 for 2.5 miles. The WMA is on the west side of the road.

Three TUNDRA SWANS were in Roseau County on September 21st, and two were in Marshall County on the 22nd. Five SNOW GOOSE were seen near the town of Kennedy in Kittson County on the 22nd. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was reported by Bill Stauffer from the small pond in Lakeview Cemetery in Minneapolis on the 25th.

More than 570 RUDDY DUCKS at the Breckenridge sewage ponds, on September 25th as were 75 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS. A second group of 75 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER were near Donaldson in Kittson Co. on the 21st; 90 more were counted at the Warren lagoons, Marshall Co., and another 60 were at the Crookston lagoons in Polk Co. Eleven BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE were at Agassiz NWR on Sep. 22. Two RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were seen at the Warren sewage ponds, also on Sep. 22. And two AMERICAN AVOCET were at the Thief River Falls sewage ponds in Marshall County on Sep. 21, along with six SANDERLINGS. Another good shorebird spot is the sod farm along state highway 3 near Castle Rock in Dakota County where PECTORAL SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER and BAIRD'S SANDPIPER can be found.

Oscar Johnson reported a good raptor migration in Brooklyn Park on September 19th. Species observed were SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, COOPER'S HAWK, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL and MERLIN.

A somewhat late BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was reported from the north hiking trail of Murphy Hanrehan park in Scott County on the 22nd.

Julie Brophy found the following lingering warblers near Flower Lake in Cook County on September 18th: BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and PALM WARBLER.

Bob Janssen reported a substantial southward migration of sparrows in western Minnesota on the 25th. Large flocks of SAVANNAH SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and HARRIS' SPARROWS were found, plus smaller groups of LE CONTE'S SPARROW were at various locations in Traverse and Grant counties. DARK-EYED JUNCOS have been reported from several locations in the Twin Cities area over the past several days and a somewhat early WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was in a Ramsey County yard on the 20th. A NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was reported by Howard Towle on the 21st at the public access to French Lake in northern Hennepin County. This is off of East French Lake Road.

Other migrants reported from various locations in Minnesota include AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, NORTHERN FLICKER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, AMERICAN PIPIT, and LAPLAND LONGSPUR.
