A FERRUGINOUS HAWK was reported flying over I-94 near the Dalton exit in Otter Tail Co. on the 30th by Bob Ekblad.
On a trip from the Northwest Angle to Thief River Falls on the 24th, some of the birds recorded by Shelley Steva included WINTER WREN, PINE WARBLERS, NASHVILLE WARBLERS, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, CAPE MAY WARBLERS and HERMIT THRUSH.
Reports from Doug Johnson on the 29th include two SNOW GEESE, eight SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, five LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a variety of ducks at the Warren sewage lagoons in Marshall Co. In Beltrami County, a SHORT-EARED OWL three miles southeast of Fourtown, along with SANDHILL CRANES and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW. And at the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall Co., Doug reported one WILSON'S PHALAROPE and eight GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
Gretchen Mehmel and Beth Siverhus completed their Breeding Bird Survey this week in the Red Lake WMA & Beltrami Island State Forest. Some of the birds recorded were OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS, ALDER FLYCATCHERS, INDIGO BUNTING, SCARLET TANAGER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, WOOD THRUSH, HERMIT THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, CONNECTICUT WARBLERS, MOURNING WARBLERS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was also heard by Brown's Lake just east of Norris Camp.
At Frenchman's Bluff in Norman Co. on the 25th, Shelley Steva and Jeanie Joppru found LARK SPARROW, SCARLET TANAGER and INDIGO BUNTING. The same day at the Twin Valley Prairie they found UPLAND SANDPIPER, SHORT-EARED OWL and SANDHILL CRANE.
While conducting a Breeding Bird Survey in Norman Co. on the 26th, birds found by Betsy Beneke included two GRAY PARTRIDGE, both GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and many FRANKLIN'S GULLS. The water birds were seen along the floodplain of the Wild Rice River, where numerous fields and croplands remain under water following torrential rains.
