This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, March 2nd, sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Lakes Area Birding Club. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

A number of folks have spotted both Canada Geese and Trumpeter Swans around the Detroit Lakes area in Becker Co. over the past week. Add this to the growing numbers of Bald Eagles, Horned Larks, Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs and it seems that the early spring migration is truly on!

Northern owls are still being reported from Roseau, Lake of the Woods and Beltrami Counties. There were two GREAT GRAY OWLS near the town of Nebish on the 1st, which is just south of Lower Red Lake in Beltrami Co. And a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen along Hwy. 89 south of Fourtown, also in Beltrami Co., on the 27th.

>From Lake Bronson State Park in Kittson Co. on the 1st, they report BALD EAGLE, SNOW BUNTING, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, HORNED LARK, PINE GROSBEAK, NORTHERN CARDINAL, PINE SISKIN, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and COMMON RAVEN. They also received a report from a local farmer of a group of common ravens driving off a coyote from a deer carcass. Birds reported there were AMERICAN CROW, HAIRY WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, GREAT HORNED OWL, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH and BLUE JAY.

At the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge in Becker Co. this week, birds present included BALD EAGLE, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GREAT HORNED OWL, BARRED OWL, and NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, PILEATED WOODPECKER, PINE GROSBEAK, EVENING GROSBEAK, PURPLE FINCH, PINE SISKIN and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.
