The pool drawdowns at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall Co. are resulting in the creation of excellent shorebird habitat and birds are pouring into the area. There is good viewing at Lansing Parker Pool which is along CR 7, west of the headquarters. Species observed there this past week include: SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS and LESSER YELLOWLEGS; SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, STILT SANDPIPERS and BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, COMMON SNIPE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK and WILSON'S PHALAROPE.

There are shorebirds at Bisson Lake on the north end of Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge in Becker Co. also, although birds are much less numerous than at Agassiz.

Peder Svingen and Philip Chu birded in northwestern MN on July 7th and 8th and found YELLOW RAILS in the old Roseau Lake bed along Roseau CR 123. Other birds heard or seen in the area included LEAST BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAILS and SORAS, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW. The EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE was still present on Springsteel Island north of Warroad in Roseau Co. also.

Celeste Colson reports that GREAT GRAY OWLS are being seen regularly near Jake's Resort in the northwest angle at Lake of the Woods.

At the Red Lake Wildlife Management Area in Lake of the Woods Co., birds reported by Gretchen Mehmel include SCARLET TANAGER and SHORT-EARED OWL.

At the Wetlands, Pines and Prairie Audubuon Sanctuary at Warren in Polk Co., Blane Klemek reports WOOD DUCK, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, SANDHILL CRANE, NORTHERN ORIOLE, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW and MANY other songbirds. Maggie the magpie is also still in residence.
