RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS have been reported in Becker County by Bill and Mary Wyatt SE of Detroit Lakes on the 14th, and one was also seen at Tamarac NWR on the 18th.
SANDHILL CRANES are showing up in Northwestern Minnesota- on Saturday March 16th a SANDHILL CRANE was spotted by a local resident in NE Marshall County NE of Goodridge, and Gretchen Mehmel reported that Ell-Kay Foss had heard them calling on March 19 just south of the Winner silo in the Beltrami Island State Forest.
Shelley Steva saw SNOW BUNTINGS in Red Lake County today- March 21- along Hwy 59.
Gretchen Mehmel reported from Norris Camp that a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along County Road 16 east of Hwy 72 in Lake of the Woods County on March 20. Also in Lake of the Woods County along the same road on Mar. 17 were 2 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE and a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE.
>From Old Mill State Park in Marshall County, Mary Broten reports the usual residents coming to the feeder- COMMON REDPOLL, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, DOWNY WOODPECKER, and HAIRY WOODPECKER. Heard nearby was a PILEATED WOODPECKER. Otter tracks could be seen in the snow. A COMMON RAVEN was also seen.
In Thief River Falls, Pennington County, this week, a MERLIN was seen again briefly. Still present below the dam were 6 COMMON MERGANSERS and now about 14 CANADA GEESE. Of note - these were not the Greater Canadas as they all had short necks The locally nesting HORNED LARKS were seen outside Thief River Falls this week.
