Migration continued at a fast pace in northwestern Minnesota this week. Temperatures warmed to the 50's and 60's as the week went on. In the south, marshes began to open, and some lakes are not far behind. In the north, however, marshes are still mostly frozen. SANDHILL CRANES made an impressive showing, especially in Clay County and northward to Marshall and Kittson Counties. Waterfowl numbers increased with flocks of SNOW GEESE and TUNDRA SWANS flying through as well as a variety of ducks. A late SNOWY OWL was observed by Todd Peterson along Hwy. 89 just south of the city of Roseau in Roseau County on the 11th. Eight ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and dancing SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were in the Lake Bronson State Park, Kittson County, area on the 5th.

>From Otter Tail County this week, Alma Ronningen reported SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, WILD TURKEY, BELTED KINGFISHER and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. Tom and Sheryl Smith also found TURKEY VULTURE, GREAT EGRET, GREATER YELLOWLEGS and KILLDEER. At Glendalough State Park on the 7th, Jeff Schultz found BLUE-WINGED TEAL, EASTERN PHOEBE and both GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.

In Becker County this week, Bill and Mary Wyatt found the first pair of OSPREY building a nest on the 7th. Increasing numbers of EASTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN ROBIN, DARK-EYED JUNCO, MEADOWLARK, COMMON REDPOLL and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH were recorded. Other birds reported were GREAT EGRET, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, LESSER SCAUP, MERLIN, KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, RING-BILLED GULL, HERRING GULL, MOURNING DOVE, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, CHIPPING SPARROW and FOX SPARROW.

>From the Wetlands, Pines and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary in Polk County, Blane Klemek reported NORTHERN HARRIER, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, MEADOWLARK and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW.

>From Pennington County on the 9th and 10th, Shelly Steva found PIED-BILLED GREBE, HOODED MERGANSER, RING-BILLED GULL and MERLIN. Jeanie Joppru also found HERRING GULL in the county as well as EASTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN ROBIN and WESTERN MEADOWLARK.

In Marshall County, Jeanie Joppru also found WESTERN MEADOWLARK on the 7th. At Old Mill State Park, Mary Broten reported RUFFED GROUSE, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, COOPER'S HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and COMMON REDPOLL. At the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, Gary Tischer and Jeanie Joppru reported GREAT BLUE HERON, TURKEY VULTURE, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, BALD EAGLE, MERLIN, SANDHILL CRANE, KILLDEER, SHORT-EARED OWL and MEADOWLARK, to name a few.

In Kittson County this week, Glenn Browne reported (from Northern BirdNet) NORTHERN PINTAIL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, KILLDEER, MOURNING DOVE, SHORT-EARED OWL and MEADOWLARK.
