Summer is definitely here with all the thunderstorms, and the baby birds showing up everywhere. Now is the time to document nesting records. Many new sounds are being heard with all the juveniles trying out their voices.
Topping the list of species found this week is an ARCTIC TERN found by Bob Janssen on Garden Island in Lake of the Woods on June 15. This area is only accessible by boat. On June 20, Beth Siverhus did a breeding bird survey in Lake of the Woods County along the Rapid River Road where she found CONNECTICUT WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, and an INDIGO BUNTING among others. Among the species seen by Pat DeWenter on June 17 in the same area were BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, ALDER FLYCATCHER, and BLUE-HEADED VIREO.
In Roseau County, Bob Janssen reported several LEAST BITTERNS at the Roseau River WMA on June 14, and BLACK DUCKS in the rice beds along CR 123. Beth Siverhus on another BBS on June 11 found several MARBLED GODWITS along CR 124, and several warbler species including MOURNING WARBLERS.
An OSPREY was seen by Bob Janssen in Kittson County on June 14. Other species spotted by Bob that day in the county included TRUMPETER SWANS at Twin Lakes, and WESTERN GREBES at Lake Bronson.
Pat DeWenter visited the Big Bog area in Beltrami County on June 17 where she saw YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, VEERY, HERMIT THRUSH, NASHVILLE WARBLERS, PALM WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER among others.
In Clearwater County, the Minnesota Birding Weekend trip led by Kim Eckert and Craig Mandel last weekend reported SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, BARRED OWL, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, WINTER WREN, WOOD THRUSH, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, and CANADA WARBLER among the species seen in and around Itasca State Park.
Hubbard County sightings by the MBW group included BARRED OWL, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, PINE WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, and many others.
From Marshall County on June 14, Bob Janssen reported a WILD TURKEY north of Florian, and a NORTHERN CARDINAL at the west end of Old Mill State Park. Sue Braastad reported from Agassiz NWR that the pair of COMMON LOONS that are nesting there have been seen with their two chicks in Parker Pool along the county road some days.
Danielle Olson reporting from Rydell NWR in Polk County included TRUMPETER SWAN, HOODED MERGANSER, and GREEN HERON among the species seen at the refuge this week.
John Ellis observed a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW along Clay County Road 26 on June 14. Nancy Jackson was at Felton Prairie on June 16 where she saw some specialties of the area including MARBLED GODWIT, UPLAND SANDPIPER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, HORNED LARK, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR, and ORCHARD ORIOLE.
In Douglas County, John Ellis reported a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO carrying nesting material at his cabin on June 16.
A HENSLOW'S SPARROW was reported by Herb Dingmann and Ron Erpelding in Todd County on June 14. The bird was singing on the west side of 335 Ave about a quarter mile north of MN 27 east of Long Prairie.
In Wadena County, the MBW group on June 15 found COMMON LOON, WILD TURKEY, TURKEY VULTURE, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, both BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, EASTERN TOWHEE, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and DICKCISSEL among many other species.
Alma Ronningen observed a DICKCISSEL in Otter Tail County four miles east of Rothsay; RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was among oher species seen near her home at Dent.
