Winter is slowly creeping towards us, with cool nights and sometimes cold , windy days. The invasion of northern finches continues with grosbeaks and crossbills continuing to be reported from many locations.
From Clearwater County, Kelly Larson reported BROWN CREEPER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, NORTHERN CARDINAL, PINE GROSBEAK and EVENING GROSBEAK south of Bagley on November 24.
Shelley Steva had a NORTHERN SHRIKE in her yard in Thief River Falls, Pennington County on November 23.
From southern Polk County, Bruce Flaig reported PINE GROSBEAK at his feeder on November 28. In East Grand Forks, Sandy Aubol reported SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 4 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, CEDAR WAXWINGS, two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, COMMON GRACKLE, and PINE GROSBEAK on November 24. Heidi Hughes at the Audubon Center today reported WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL and EVENING GROSBEAK in addition to the above.
Kristy May in Waubun, Mahnomen County, observed RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, COMMON REDPOLL, and PINE GROSBEAK this week.
Steve Midthune in Becker County reported BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Lake Park on November 27, and PINE GROSBEAKS there on November 29.
Marshall Howe in Hubbard County saw several flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS between Dorset and Park Rapids, and a flock of DARK-EYED JUNCOS just west of Dorset on November 25. Other species seem in the area that day included COMMON GOLDENEYES, RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and PINE GROSBEAKS. On the 25th, there was a NORTHERN CARDINAL , and on the 28th, a large flock of 150 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Park Rapids. On November 28, he also saw two light phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in the area.
Amy Drake in Otter Tail County, reported PINE GROSBEAKS near Richville on November 25. Roland Jordahl observed PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and 50 COMMON REDPOLLS on November 29 in Pelican Rapids. Dan and Sandy Thimgan observed NORTHERN FLICKER, CEDAR WAXWINGS, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, and COMMON GRACKLE at their feeders in central Otter Tail County this week.
