This has been a cold week in the northwest, and feeders have been extremely busy - at least those that are kept filled.
Kelly Larson in Clearwater County reported a NORTHERN HAWK OWL three miles west of Shevlin on CR 30 on January 18. Other species seen in the county included RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, PINE GROSBEAKS, and HOARY REDPOLL.
Steve Patterson observed RED CROSSBILLS at a feeder on the north shore of Lake Bemidji in Beltrami County on January 20.
In Pennington County, Shelley Steva saw 12 LAPLAND LONGSPURS on January 22.
Shelley reported PINE GROSBEAKS in Oklee in Red Lake County on January 21 , and a BALD EAGLE at the Pennington -Red Lake County line.
In Polk County, Sandy Aubol reported two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at her feeder in East Grand Forks on January 21 and a BROWN CREEPER that showed up on January 23. Heidi Hughes reported PINE GROSBEAKS, many COMMON REDPOLLS, and several HOARY REDPOLLS at the Audubon Center feeders on January 20.
Kristy May in Waubun in Mahnomen County saw EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and PINE GROSBEAKS this week. Large flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS were also seen.
In Norman County south of Syre, Kristy saw a COMMON RAVEN on January 22.
Kathy Bresee in Moorhead , Clay County, reported that a VARIED THRUSH has been visiting her yard daily. An AMERICAN ROBIN and a PINE SISKIN are also among the regular visitors to the feeder.
Gary Otnes in Otter Tail County observed RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER , NORTHERN FLICKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and HOARY REDPOLLS at feeders this week. A surprise visitor to the feeder was a RING-NECKED PHEASANT.
From Douglas County, Benjamin Eckhoff reported PINE GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS at Lake Carlos State Park on January 23.
