This week has seen the countryside blossom with many wild flowers that are enjoying the many showers. Late summer wildflowers like asters, and black-eyed susan cover every pasture and uncultivated field. Combined with a few sunflower fields, the landscape is a riot of color now. Young birds are everywhere.
From Grant County, Charlene Nelson reported a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK on August 6. A RED KNOT was found on August 10 with other shorebirds on the north side of the Ottawa Impoundment.
Steve Midthune found shorebirds on the north side of US 10 in a flooded bean field 2.5 miles west of Lake Park on August 6. Present were PECTORAL SANDPIPER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, and KILLDEER. TRUMPETER SWAN and GREEN HERON were also seen there.
Here in Pennington County on August 10, the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER pair showed up at the feeder. On August 4, a group of birders led by Craig Mandel found a variety of ducks including 21 RUDDY DUCKS at the Thief River Falls WTP. Other species seen included PIED-BILLED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, and EARED GREBE, small numbers of 8 common shorebirds, FRANKLIN'S GULLS, BLACK TERNS, a MERLIN, and three YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS.
I joined Craig's group in a trip to Kittson County where we found COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE , BLACK TERN, and AMERICAN BITTERN at Twin Lakes; WILD TURKEY, TURKEY VULTURE, and CHIMNEY SWIFTS were also seen in the county. A very cooperative BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was found near Larry Wilebski’s place, and a LE CONTE’S SPARROW allowed itself to be seen perched in a weedy field.
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was reported by Nathan Martineau at Zippel Bay State Park campground in Lake of the Woods County on August 5.
