There is no doubt now that summer is on the way out. Leaves are subtly changing and a few are falling. The early part of the weekend was very windy and warm, then the rain came, and the last two days included thunderstorms and heavy rain for much of Sunday and part of Monday. Flowers are winding down and starting to get that tired look that signals the end of the season. Migration is going full blast. This week we have seen an unusual number of TURKEY VULTURES, hundreds of migrating NORTHERN FLICKERS, and blackbirds. There have been many observations of AMERICAN KESTRELS in family groups all along the power lines in rural areas. Most of the swallows have departed, with stragglers of most species still to be seen.
Despite very difficult conditions, the Minnesota Birding Weekend group led by Kim Eckert found 160 species including 18 species of shorebirds, and 20 species of warblers on the 3 ½ days of the weekend.
The MBW group found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in the burn area 7.5 miles northeast of Hayes Lake State Park along the Thompson Forest Road in Roseau County.
In Beltrami County, Nancy Wasik reported eight NORTHERN FLICKERS in her yard on September 2.
In Marshall County, the MBW group found an immature LITTLE BLUE HERON with a group of about 40 GREAT EGRETS at Farmes Pool at Agassiz NWR on September 4. In addition they located 4 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, at the drawn down Headquarters Pool . There were 14 shorebird species seen at Agassiz, most at Farmes Pool. On September 5, they discovered a SNOWY EGRET with the great egrets there. Also there, the group saw numbers of GREEN HERONS, AMERICAN BITTERNS, GREAT BLUE HERONS, and SORAS. 18 of the 20 species of warblers seen on the weekend were found at the Headquarters of Agassiz NWR including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, and NORTHERN PARULA.
Of note in Pennington County, the MBW group found 40 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Thief River Falls WTP, and a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was seen on September 5 near the grain elevators in Thief River Falls. The only BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER of the weekend was seen in Pennington County on September 2. Today, I had a TURKEY VULTURE fly over the yard. Several RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS are still coming to the nectar, and a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and GRAY CATBIRD were seen in the yard today.
In Red Lake County, the MBW group saw a GREATER PRAIRIE CHICKEN, and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen in both counties on the county line with Pennington County on September 2. A PEREGRINE FALCON flew by at the Red Lake Falls WTP.
Marshall Howe in Hubbard County reported YELLOW-THROATED VIREO on September 4, 10 warbler species in one flock came by on September 5 , including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, and WILSON'S WARBLER . Other species seen on September 5 included COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and RED-EYED VIREO. On September 6, he observed a migrating SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.
Charlene Nelson in Grant County reported two WINTER WRENS in her yard on September 8.
