We are still in the freezer here in northern Minnesota. Feeders have been busy , but it is very quiet outside of the towns. Most feeders are hosting many black-capped chickadees, a few white-breasted nuthatches, and common redpolls, along with the common woodpeckers.

Wayne Perala reported three SNOWY OWLS in Grant and Otter Tail Counties on January 3. In Grant County he saw SNOW BUNTINGS, LAPLAND LONGSPURS, HORNED LARKS, and COMMON REDPOLLS.

In Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, on December 28, he saw GREAT BLUE HERON, BELTED KINGFISHER, COMMON MERGANSER, COMMON GOLDENEYE, HOODED MERGANSER, TRUMPETER SWANS , and NORTHERN CARDINAL. He reported ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and COMMON REDPOLL on January 3.

A VARIED THRUSH was seen by Patrick Beauzay in Hawley township of Clay County on December 24.

Two SNOWY OWLS were reported in Polk County, one on December 26, and one on January 3.

Shelley Steva saw a SNOWY OWL in Red Lake County on December 22, and 200 SNOW BUNTINGS near Oklee.

Beth Siverhus reported a BALD EAGLE and a PILEATED WOODPECKER in Warroad , Roseau County , on January 4.

The Roseau CBC was held on December 30. Twenty-one species were found under very cold conditions. They included 7 GRAY PARTRIDGE, 1 SPRUCE GROUSE, 44 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 2 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS, two GREAT GRAY OWLS in count week, 96 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 12 PINE GROSBEAKS, and 13 PURPLE FINCH.

On December 31, the Beltrami Island CBC tallied 15 species including one NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 8 RED CROSSBILLS, 1 BARRED OWL, 4 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, and found a GREAT GRAY OWL just outside the circle. The Baudette CBC was held the next day and 27 species were found including 1 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, 1 MOURNING DOVE, 1 HOARY REDPOLL, 24 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 10 BALD EAGLES, 8 GRAY JAYS, 31 EVENING GROSBEAKS, and 54 PINE GROSBEAKS. Both of these circles are in Lake of the Woods County.
