This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 23, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
On the 20th a RED KNOT and two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were at 40th Ave West. On the 21st, Jim Barrett found WILSON'S PHALAROPES at Spirit Lake on the St. Louis River. On the 22nd, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen at Morgan Park and at 40th Ave West. There were small groups of SANDERLINGS on the beach at Minnesota and Wisconsin Point yesterday.
Mike Steffes reported last weekend that BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS are on territory along the Superior Hiking Trail, both at Moose Mountain in Cook County and at the E. Castle Danger Rd. Mike also spotted a SORA in a spruce tree along the shore.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER has returned to Julie O'Connor's yard in Solway Township.
To recap from last weekend's Hawk Ridge Birdathon, 50 participants found 212 species (which, it turns out, is short of the record by six species). Highlights included a Snowy Owl, the King Eider and several other sea ducks, three Red-throated Loons, Whimbrels, a Little Gull, an Orchard Oriole, and Snow Buntings on the beach. Bill Maier found a lone COMMON REDPOLL with some siskins along the Rice Lake Dam Road. The winning team of Tony Hertzel and Peder Svingen found 163 species.
The next scheduled update will be Thursday, May 30th.
