This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 2, 2003, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On the 26th, Jim and Sharon Lind found a female THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and a female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in northern Lake County on the Spruce Rd 0.2 mile east of Endless Waters Rd. There were also BOREAL CHICKADEES and PINE GROSBEAKS in this area. Jim and Sharon found another Black-backed where the snowmobile trail crosses the Spruce Rd, four miles from Hwy 1. Bob Dunlap reported RED CROSSBILLS on the Mitiwan Lake Rd, which also runs north from Hwy 1, and a single SPRUCE GROUSE on Cty Rd 2 near the Sand River.

On Dec. 28th, Colin Gjervold reported a GREAT GRAY OWL in the Sax-Zim area on Hwy 7 south of the sod farm. BOREAL CHICKADEES were seen just east of the intersection of Hwy 110 and Cty Rd 116 south of Hoyt Lakes. On the first, Craig Mandel refound a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on McDavitt Rd 2.6 miles north of the Sax Rd. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS are still abundant in coniferous habitat throughout Northeastern Minnesota. Large flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen at Two Harbors and Tofte this week.

Gary Nelson found a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on Lake Superior off 21st Ave E on the 1st.Two adult GLAUCOUS GULLS were at Knife River on the 28th. Frank Nicoletti reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the state trail off Jean Duluth Rd. on the 28th. Dave Carman found a MERLIN near UMD on the 26th. Scott and Nan Wisherd reported that a male NORTHERN PINTAIL is still in the Duluth Harbor. Karen Sussman reported that a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS is overwintering at Silver Lake in Virginia.
