This is the Duluth Birding Report for Friday, October 17th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Single RED-THROATED LOONS were found by Mike Hendrickson at Park Point on the 12th from the 31st Street Lafayette Square access and near the Sky Harbor Airport. One was relocated on the 13th near the airport, along with two SURF SCOTERS. Peder Svingen relocated the adult ROSS'S GOOSE on the 10th at the Park Point Recreation Area, as well as the first-cycle FRANKLIN’S GULL that has been reported during the past few weeks.
Erik Bruhnke reported a WESTERN GREBE and an ARCTIC LOON at Wisconsin Point on the 12th, and two SABINE'S GULLS and a BLACK SCOTER on the 16th. Mike Hendrickson found a first-winter THAYER’S GULL on the 10th on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry.
Jan Kraemer found a FIELD SPARROW on the 16th in the Duluth Heights neighborhood at the junction of Ideal Street and Farrell Road. On the 11th Jan saw a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS in Carlton County on Island Lake south of MN Highway 210 at Cromwell. Jan Green saw a late AMERICAN REDSTART on the 15th along the Old North Shore Road in Duluth Township.
High counts of 17,667 AMERICAN ROBINS on the 15th and 799 PURPLE FINCHES on the 16th were tallied at Hawk Ridge. A RED-THROATED LOON, SHORT-EARED OWL and the season's first NORTHERN SHRIKE flew by the overlook on the 16th. Single BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen on an almost daily basis during the past week.
