This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 13th, 2014 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on the 5th flying just west of Two Harbors along MN Highway 61, but it has not been seen since. Caleb Ashling and Andy Forbes saw eight SPRUCE GROUSE on the 8th along Lake County Road 2 about a mile north of the Sand River. They also saw two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS along the Spruce Road south of Ely.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen by Tony Lau and Kevin Smith on the 4th in the Sax-Zim Bog along the Admiral Road, 4 miles south of CR 27. GREAT GRAY OWLS are being seen in the bog along CR 7 north of CR 28 and near CR 133, along the McDavitt and Admiral Roads, and along CR 27. SNOWY OWLS were reported as recently as the 8th along CR 7 near the Zim Road and NORTHERN HAWK OWLS have been seen along Owl Avenue and along the Admiral Road. Erik Bruhke saw the first NORTHERN HARRIER of the season in the bog on the 11th and he also heard an early SONG SPARROW.
