This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 26th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The waterbird count at Big Stone NWR in Big Stone and Lac Qui Parle counties produced 15 species of shorebirds on the 25th. Among those observed were 538 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 330 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 35 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 165 STILT SANDPIPERS, and 5 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.
In Houston County, Dedrick Benz reported several shorebirds between Brownsville and the dam at the Reno Bottoms. Six species of shorebirds were reported from this area on the 24th.
19 species of shorebirds were at Lansing Parker Pool at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County on July 21st including the very unusual sighting of two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.
Chris Benson found two AMERICAN AVOCETS at the Lewiston sewage lagoons in Winona County on July 23rd.
Gary Nix found two EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS in Chanhassen, Carver County. The birds were calling from his yard on the evening of July 26th.
Terry Brashear reported two TRUMPETER SWANS on the 21st. They were on the north side of U.S. Highway 12 in a wetland just west of Orono in Hennepin County.
And Carol Gresser found two SANDHILL CRANES on the 17th in section 16 of Greenville Township in Dakota County. This was along the 8500 block of 300th Street.
