This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 19th.
The unusual immature gull is still being seen at Black Dog Lake just east of the power plant in Burnsville, Dakota County. There is some indication that this may be a SLATY-BACKED GULL. It is fairly consistently seen near the sandbar just east of the railroad tracks that lead into the plant on the south side of the lake. Also present are an adult GLAUCOUS GULL, an immature ICELAND GULL, and two immature THAYER'S GULLS.
In Willmar, Kandiyohi County, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen at the New London Fish Hatchery, and a ROSS'S GOOSE was seen on Foot Lake with a flock of approximately 9,000 CANADA GEESE. Anyone wanting additional information on specific locations is encouraged to contact Randy Frederickson of Willmar.
In Rice County a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was reported near Northfield, six tenths of a mile south of Old Dutch Road on 90th St. This was on December 16th. Two days earlier it had been reported one mile east of here.
An adult SNOWY OWL was found on the Cottonwood Christmas Bird Count on December 15th. It was first seen near Lady Slipper Lake, but flew to an area near the intersection of state highway 23 and Lyon County Road 73. On the 14th, an immature SNOWY OWL was seen along Marshall County Road 7 at the headquarters pool of Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge.
A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen along St. Louis County Road 319 about half a mile east of County Road 7 in the Sax Zim Bog area on the 16th.
Kim Risen reported that the Crosby Christmas Bird Count included a very late WINTER WREN plus a few RED CROSSBILLS on Crow Wing County Road 28 south of the town of Ironton.
On the 14th, the late NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was still along the Trout Run Creek Trail at Whitewater State Park in Winona County. It was found between the 1st and 2nd stream crossings.
A large flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was in Grand Marais, Cook County on the 16th. Other callers have reported a few BROWN CREEPERS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
