This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 23rd.
On the 19th, there was a female-plumaged HARLEQUIN DUCK at the Agate Bay boat launch in downtown Two Harbors, Lake County. It was seen next to shore near the old concrete dock. There is also a flock of about 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at 3rd Avenue and 2nd Street.
A flock of about 200 Bohemian Waxwings was seen by Jo Blanich in Crosby, Crow Wing County, on the 19th.
On January 18th, Warren Nelson found a GREAT GRAY OWL about a quarter of a mile west of Pietz's Road on Aitkin County Road 18. He also reports two flocks of Bohemian Waxwings in the town of Aitkin. The larger flock was one block north of the hospital and smaller was at the west edge of town on 1st Street. Also seen in Aitkin County were BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, NORTHERN SHRIKES and GRAY JAYS.
A SWAMP SPARROW is over-wintering at the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in Hennepin County. It is often seen at the Visitor's Center feeding station.
And finally, Barb Kull has a pair of PURPLE FINCHES at her feeder in Isanti, Isanti County. This is the only report of this species I have had this winter season.
