The BAIRD'S SPARROW originally found by John Richardson at The Nature Conservancy's Glacial Ridge Project in Polk County on June 18th has been observed as recently as July 11th. Directions to the site are to go 3.5 miles west on U.S. Hwy. 2 from its junction with State Hwy. 32, then turn south unto the gravel pit road. Go past the office and follow the main road that goes SE one mile from Hwy. 2. The sparrow has most recently been singing on the west side of the road, southwest of the large concrete slab. Other birds reported from Polk County this week included UPLAND SANDPIPER, SCARLET TANAGER, ORCHARD ORIOLE and LARK SPARROW.
At the Chicog WMA, also in Polk County, Doug Johnson observed BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and DICKCISSEL this week.
I received a late report of a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in Ottertail County on June 30th at the Westwood Resort on Rush Lake. However, a follow up visit by Jeff Schultz didn't produce the bird. Other Ottertail County birds reported include WILD TURKEY and FIELD SPARROW at Maplewood State Park.
In Becker County, at the Hamden Slough NWR, shorebirds reported this week include AMERICAN AVOCET, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER. The three avocet chicks are near flight stage! At the Tamarac NWR, staff have found eight pairs of TRUMPETER SWANS with 40 cygnets - a new record for production!
Thanks to Wayne Brininger, Dave and Cheryl Dornberg, Mary Wyatt and the staff at Hamden Slough NWR.
