Migration has begun in Northwestern Minnesota! Shorebirds and warblers are increasing in numbers and variety, and swallows are gathering by the hundreds at staging areas throughout the region. Increasing numbers of raptors are also being seen.

In Ottertail County, Alma Ronningen reported an OVENBIRD, AMERICAN REDSTART, and YELLOW WARBLERS in her yard.

Becker County birds include CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, and COMMON NIGHTHAWK seen by Mary Wyatt . At Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge, 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT- HERONS were seen. Also at the refuge, are about 3000 waterfowl and several hundred shorebirds. Forty-one GREAT EGRETS were sighted at Hamstad Lake just east of the headquarters. From Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, Betsy Beneke reports that the plantings near the visitor center are full of birds at this time. She identified over 20 species of birds using the area including: RUFFED GROUSE, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, EASTERN PHOEBE, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, WARBLING VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN ROBIN, GRAY CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, CEDAR WAXWING, CHIPPING SPARROW, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and PURPLE FINCH. In addition fifteen species of warblers were found : GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, WILSON'S WARBLER, and CANADA WARBLER.

Shelley Steva birded the Crookston sewage lagoons in Polk County on the 24th. Highlights were GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, 20 STILT SANDPIPERS, 20 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, BLACK TERNS, 20 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN PHOEBE, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, BLACK-AND- WHITE WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, SCARLET TANAGER, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER or ALDER FLYCATCHER which did not call. This is a great place to bird, having both water and trees nearby.

Peder Svingen counted 15 species of shorebirds at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County on August 24. Included were 60 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 2 KILLDEER, 84 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 86 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 206 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 4 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 11 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 195 STILT SANDPIPERS, 5 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 COMMON SNIPE, 3 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, and 4 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.

It is to be noted that recent heavy rains throughout the area will affect the distribution of shorebirds. It remains to be seen just how that will play out. Many areas that were good habitat at the time of this report may be too wet by now. Also caution should be used when driving on unpaved roads as the shoulders will be very soft after the heavy rain.
