Cooler weather across the region has us thinking about fall. Reports indicate that the shorebird migration is already in full swing.
In Roseau County, many of the large number of shorebirds reported last week have left the area east of Hwy 310 north of Roseau. Many shorebirds were present along County Road 123 in the old Roseau Lake bed north of County Road 16 on August 9th.There a GREAT EGRET and many GREAT BLUE HERONS were found feasting on frogs . Shorebirds found in northern Roseau County last weekend at the highway 310 site included: 12 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS , SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, MARBLED GODWIT, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPERS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and DUNLINS, and, at the Roseau Lake bed 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS , and WILSON'S PHALAROPES along with most of the others. There is much movement among the shorebirds- on two successive days, the numbers and species of birds had changed noticeably. Both areas will bear watching in the coming weeks.
>From Old Mill State Park in Marshall County Mary Broten reports immature ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, immature RED CROSSBILLS, BELTED KINGFISHERS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, numbers of NORTHERN FLICKERS , and a BALD EAGLE 7 miles east of Newfolden. She also reported hearing LONG-EARED OWLS on private property near the park.
At Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County, Gary Tischer says there are a few GREAT EGRETS along Marshall County 7 and more in the interior of the refuge. About 50 GREAT BLUE HERONS, and several 100 shorebirds of various species are scattered throughout the refuge though most are to be found on Parker and Upper Middle CCC Pools. A pair of TRUMPETER SWANS which has been around all summer has been sighted on Parker and Madsen Pools. There was a good second nesting of ducks after the flooding, and BLACK TERNS and FORSTER'S TERNS now have young flying. SANDHILL CRANES are consistently seen on and near the refuge.
>From Becker County, Kay Hartness reported 6 SANDHILL CRANES on the 13th in a field west of Becker County Road 37 about 1/2 mile south of Becker County25. Also in Becker County Sally Hausken saw a possible migrant BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER in her yard on the south shore of Detroit Lake. On August 15, Curt and Pat Pulcini, visiting birders from Ohio, saw a LEAST BITTERN at the Detroit Lakes WMD office marsh boardwalk.
Wilkin County birds observed by Linda Felker included ALDER FLYCATCHER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, DICKCISSEL, and ORCHARD ORIOLE. In Clay County, she saw an UPLAND SANDPIPER, an ALDER FLYCATCHER, and a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO.
